#Safety Sunday – Fun in the Sun Starts with Staying Safe

Sunny days are made for playground adventures, beach trips, backyard barbecues, and long afternoons outside. But while soaking up the sunshine feels great, too much sun can quickly turn a fun day into a painful one. The good news? Staying safe in the sun is easy for both kids and adults with a few simple habits.

Slip on the Sunscreen

Sunscreen is your best summer sidekick. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside.

Do not forget easy-to-miss spots like:

  • Ears
  • Neck
  • Tops of feet
  • Nose
  • hairlines

Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

Hats, Shades, and Cool Clothes

Think of summer gear as sun armor. Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing help protect skin and keep everyone cooler. Bonus points for kids who pick fun hats they actually want to wear.

Take Shade Breaks

The sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. That does not mean staying inside all day, but it does mean taking breaks in the shade when possible. Trees, umbrellas, splash pads, and covered picnic spots can help everyone cool down and recharge.

Water First

Running around in the heat can quickly lead to dehydration, especially for children. Keep water bottles nearby and encourage regular drink breaks, even if no one says they are thirsty yet. Frozen fruit, popsicles, and watermelon are fun ways to help stay hydrated as well.

Watch for Overheating

Too much sun and heat can sneak up quickly.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Flushed skin
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea

If someone feels unwell, move to a cool spot, drink water, and rest right away.

Teach Kids Sun Safe Habits Early

Kids learn by watching adults. When sunscreen, hats, and water breaks become part of the routine, children are more likely to carry those healthy habits into the future. A little prevention today can protect skin for years to come.

Enjoy Summer Safely

Summer memories should be about laughter, adventure, and time together, not sunburns and heat exhaustion. With sunscreen, shade, and plenty of water, families can enjoy every sunny moment safely all season long. ☀️
