#Safety Sunday: From Long Weekend to Back-to-School

Labour Day weekend often feels like the last big summer celebration. For many families across Bruce and Grey counties, it also means something else: back-to-school is right around the corner. As we enjoy the long weekend, it’s a good time to start thinking about making the transition back to school safe and smooth.

Get Back Into a Routine

Summer often means later nights and more relaxed mornings. A few days before school begins, gradually returning to regular bedtimes and morning routines can make that first week a little easier. Getting enough sleep can also help children stay alert and focused, whether they’re walking, biking, or taking the bus to school.

Slow Down in School Zones

With students returning to class, drivers need to get back into the school-year routine too. Watch carefully for children at intersections, crosswalks, and bus stops. Slow down in school zones, avoid distractions behind the wheel, and give yourself a little extra time during the morning commute.

Review Walking and Biking Safety

If your child walks or bikes to school, take some time to review their route together. Remind them to use sidewalks and designated crossings whenever possible, look both ways before crossing the street, and stay alert around driveways and intersections.

Cyclists should wear a properly fitted helmet and follow the rules of the road. With mornings gradually getting darker as we move toward fall, visibility is also important.

Talk About School Bus Safety

Remind children to wait in a safe place away from traffic and follow the driver’s instructions when getting on or off the bus. Drivers should also be prepared for school buses to return to local roads and know the rules around stopping for a school bus.

Pack With Safety in Mind

Backpacks can get heavy quickly. Encourage children to carry only what they need and use both shoulder straps to help distribute the weight evenly. It’s also a good opportunity to make sure emergency contact information is up to date with the school.

Enjoy the Long Weekend Safely

Before the school-year routine begins, enjoy that final long weekend of summer. Whether you’re at the beach, camping, travelling, having a barbecue or simply relaxing at home, make safety part of your plans.

At United Way Bruce Grey, we know that strong communities are built when we look out for one another. A little preparation this Labour Day weekend can help families head into the new school year feeling safer, more organized, and ready for what’s ahead.

Have a safe Labour Day weekend and a great start to the new school year!
