As summer begins to wind down and fall approaches, drivers across Bruce and Grey counties can expect to see more farm equipment travelling on local roads. Tractors, combines, and other large agricultural vehicles may move slowly and take up more space than a typical vehicle. For farmers, these roads are an important part of getting from field to field and completing the busy harvest season.

For Safety Sunday, United Way of Bruce Grey is reminding everyone to slow down, stay patient, and give farm equipment plenty of room. Avoid passing unless you have a clear view of the road ahead and it is safe and legal to do so. Remember that large equipment may need extra space to make turns, and a tractor that appears to be pulling to the right may actually be preparing for a wide left turn.

A few extra seconds of patience can make a big difference. Watch for slow-moving vehicle signs, reduce your speed when approaching farm equipment, leave plenty of following distance, and be especially cautious on hills, curves, and narrow rural roads.

Farmers are working hard during one of their busiest times of the year, and everyone deserves to get where they are going safely. This harvest season, slow down, share the road and look out for one another.
