#Safety Sunday – School’s Out for Summer: Let’s Keep Our Kids Safe

The final school bell has rung, and summer is officially here! Across Bruce and Grey counties, children will be spending more time outdoors riding bikes, walking to parks, playing with friends, and enjoying everything that makes summer special.

With more kids out and about during the day, drivers play an important role in helping keep our communities safe.

Slow Down in Residential Areas

Children can be unpredictable. A ball rolling into the street might be followed by a child chasing after it without looking for traffic. Reducing your speed gives you more time to react and can prevent serious accidents.

Watch for Cyclists

Many children will be riding their bikes to parks, pools, and friends’ homes. Give cyclists plenty of space when passing and always check your mirrors and blind spots before turning or opening your vehicle door.

Be Extra Cautious Near Parks and Playgrounds

Parks, splash pads, sports fields, and community centres are especially busy during the summer months. Expect children to be nearby, even if you don’t immediately see them.

Put Away the Distractions

A glance at your phone can take your eyes off the road long enough to miss a child crossing the street. Keep your focus on driving and save texts or calls until you’ve safely parked.

Watch for Pedestrians Everywhere

Families are taking advantage of the warm weather by walking more often. Always be prepared to stop at crosswalks and intersections, and remember that children may not always recognize traffic dangers.

Lead by Example

Children learn from the adults around them. By driving patiently, following speed limits, and showing courtesy to pedestrians and cyclists, you’re helping create safer habits for everyone.

We All Have a Role to Play

Summer should be filled with laughter, adventures, and happy memories. A little extra patience behind the wheel can make all the difference in ensuring every child gets home safely at the end of the day.

From all of us at United Way Bruce Grey, thank you for helping make our communities safer this summer. Together, we can look out for one another and help every child enjoy a fun, active, and safe summer break.
