#Safety Sunday: Stay Safe While Tackling Fall Yard Work

Fall is here, and across Bruce and Grey Counties, that means colourful leaves, cooler temperatures, and plenty of outdoor cleanup.

Raking leaves, cleaning gutters, trimming branches, and getting the yard ready for winter might seem like routine chores, but a few simple precautions can help prevent an unexpected injury.

Take Your Time

There can be a lot to get done before winter arrives, but you don’t have to tackle everything at once. Take regular breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid pushing yourself when you’re tired.

When raking or lifting bags of leaves, use your legs rather than your back and avoid twisting while carrying something heavy.

Be Careful on Ladders

Cleaning gutters or trimming branches may mean reaching for a ladder. Before climbing, make sure the ladder is on firm, level ground and never stand on the very top.

If possible, have someone nearby to steady the ladder or assist you.

If a job feels too high, unstable, or difficult to reach safely, leave it for someone with the proper equipment.

Watch for Slippery Surfaces

Wet leaves can be surprisingly slippery, especially on decks, steps, sidewalks and driveways.

Keep walkways clear and wear sturdy footwear with good traction. Early morning frost can also create slippery surfaces as temperatures begin to drop.

Use Outdoor Equipment Safely

Before using a lawn mower, leaf blower, hedge trimmer or other powered equipment, check that it’s in good working condition and use it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Wear appropriate footwear, eye protection, and hearing protection when necessary. Keep children and pets a safe distance away while equipment is operating.

Know Your Limits

Some jobs in fall are better left to professionals. Large branches, damaged trees, electrical hazards, and work at significant heights can quickly become dangerous.

Getting the yard ready for winter isn’t worth risking a serious injury.

A Safer Fall Starts With Simple Choices

Fall cleanup can be a great opportunity to enjoy some fresh air and prepare your home for the season ahead. Plan your work, use the right equipment, and don’t rush.

This Safety Sunday, remember: work smart, take your time, and make safety part of your fall cleanup routine.
