With students back in school across Bruce and Grey counties, school buses are once again a familiar sight on our roads. That makes September a good time for everyone to refresh their school bus safety habits.

For drivers, patience and attention are essential. Watch for school buses making frequent stops, especially during the morning and afternoon. Slow down in school zones and residential areas, and always be prepared for children who may enter or cross the road unexpectedly. When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must follow Ontario’s school bus stopping laws.

For parents and caregivers, talk with children about staying a safe distance from the road while waiting for the bus. Encourage them to arrive at their bus stop a few minutes early so they don’t have to rush. Children should wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and the driver signals that it is safe before approaching or crossing.

For students, a few simple habits can make a big difference. Stay seated while the bus is moving, keep aisles clear, listen to the bus driver, and never walk behind a school bus. If you drop something near the bus, don’t try to retrieve it without first getting the driver’s attention.

School bus safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re behind the wheel, walking your child to the bus stop, or riding the bus to school, being alert and patient helps protect everyone.
