Helping Newcomers Build Confidence Around Water Through Swim to Survive

Living in Bruce Grey means being surrounded by beautiful lakes, beaches, rivers, and pools. For many of us, learning to swim and understanding water safety are experiences that begin at a young age. However, for many newcomers to Canada, swimming lessons may be unavailable or inaccessible.
That is why United Way Bruce Grey is proud to support the YMCA Owen Sound Grey Bruce’s Newcomer Swim to Survive program, a free water safety initiative designed to help newcomers of all ages gain confidence in and around the water.
The program focuses on teaching essential swimming and water safety skills to help participants stay safe while enjoying the many aquatic opportunities our region offers. Whether visiting a local beach, spending time at a community pool, or simply feeling more comfortable around water, these skills can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
More than just swimming lessons, Swim to Survive helps build confidence, reduce barriers to participation, and create opportunities for newcomers and their families to feel more connected to their community. The program welcomes individuals, families, children, youth, and adults, making it an accessible opportunity for everyone.
The upcoming session will take place on July 5 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the YMCA Health, Fitness & Aquatics Facility, located at 700 10th Street East in Owen Sound. The class is offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of United Way Bruce Grey and funding partnerships that help make community programs like this possible.
Registration is required so organizers can prepare for the number of participants attending. Community organizations and service providers are encouraged to share this opportunity with individuals and families who may benefit from learning these valuable life skills.
Together, we can help ensure everyone in our community has the knowledge, confidence, and opportunity to safely enjoy the water and all that Bruce Grey has to offer.
