#FinancialFridays: From Budgeting Basics to Benefits

When I first started working for the United Way of Bruce Grey, I had experience helping family and friends with budgets. I seemed to be a go-to person to talk about money and play with spreadsheets to those in my life. I also had experience helping create micro-lending programs in other countries.

But… I wasn’t confident about all the programs in Canada, Ontario, and Grey and Bruce Counties that impact people’s income. And, for learning that, I went to Prosper Canada, “a national charity dedicated to expanding opportunity for Canadians living in poverty”. They have a training course to help prepare people like me, who help others work through financial issues and learn about managing money.

They have this one online tool called the Benefits Wayfinder that is so easy to use and can help make sure you are getting all the government benefits you can. It starts by asking you questions about yourself and your situation. It then recommends benefits you may be eligible for and tells you how to apply for them.

Everyone I speak with, whether it is through my work or in my personal life, is struggling with money and covering all their costs. It is good to know if there are benefits you may be missing out on; It is also good to know if you are accessing all the benefits that are available to you.

Thank you, Prosper Canada, for helping Canadians learn about financial support and realistic strategies for managing money!
