#Safety Sunday: Pack It Right for a Safer School Day

A backpack is part of almost every student’s school day. It carries books, lunches, school supplies, water bottles, and everything else students need to get through the day. But when a backpack is too heavy or isn’t worn properly, it can become uncomfortable and put unnecessary strain on a student’s back and shoulders.

This Safety Sunday, we’re sharing a few simple reminders to help students pack and carry their backpacks safely.

Pack Smart

Start by taking a look inside the backpack. Students can often end up carrying around books, papers, and supplies they don’t need every day. Regularly cleaning out a backpack can help keep its weight manageable.

When packing, place heavier items closer to the student’s back and lighter items toward the outside. Using the different compartments can also help distribute supplies more evenly.

Use Both Straps

It can be tempting to sling a backpack over one shoulder, especially when rushing out the door. Using both shoulder straps helps distribute the weight more evenly across the body.

The straps should also be adjusted so the backpack sits comfortably and securely against the student’s back rather than hanging too low.

Check the Fit

Children grow quickly, and a backpack that fit well last year might not be the right fit today. Take a moment every so often to check that the backpack still feels comfortable and isn’t causing pain or discomfort.

If a student regularly complains that their backpack feels too heavy, that’s a good reason to take another look at what’s being carried each day.

The Backpack Program Is About More Than a Backpack

At United Way of Bruce Grey, we know having the right supplies can help students begin their school year feeling prepared and ready to learn.

In 2026, the United Way of Bruce Grey Backpack Program assisted 2,460 local students across Bruce and Grey Counties. That’s approximately 1 in every 10 students in the three publicly funded school systems serving our communities.

Each backpack represents a local student who received the school supplies they needed to start the year.

This Safety Sunday, take a few minutes to check your child’s backpack. Pack smart, use both straps, check the fit, and help make every trip to and from school a little more comfortable.
