#Safety Sunday: Cold Weather Is Coming! Is Your Home Ready?

As temperatures begin to drop across Bruce and Grey counties, now is a great time to make sure your home is ready for the colder months ahead. A little preparation today can help keep you and your family warm, safe, and comfortable throughout the fall and winter.

Here are a few simple ways to get your home winter-ready:

  • Check your heating system: Make sure your furnace or other heating equipment is working properly. Replace filters and consider scheduling a professional inspection.
  • Keep the cold air out: Check windows and doors for drafts. Weatherstripping and sealing small gaps can help keep the heat inside and reduce energy costs.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms: Make sure alarms are working properly and replace batteries when needed.
  • Prepare for power outages: Keep flashlights, extra batteries, blankets, and essential supplies handy in case winter weather causes an outage.
  • Clear outdoor walkways: Remove fallen leaves and debris from steps and sidewalks. Keep salt or sand available for icy conditions.
  • Use space heaters safely: Keep portable heaters at least one metre away from anything that can burn, and always turn them off before leaving a room or going to sleep.

Looking Out for One Another

Not everyone has the resources to prepare their home for colder weather. Rising living costs can make staying warm a challenge for some individuals and families in our communities.

At United Way of Bruce Grey, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. As temperatures fall, consider checking in on an older neighbour, a friend living alone, or someone who may need a little extra help preparing for winter.

If you or someone you know needs assistance finding local community resources, call 211. It’s free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This Safety Sunday, remember that staying safe isn’t just about preparing our own homes. It’s also about looking out for each other. Together, we can help keep Bruce and Grey counties warm, safe, and caring this winter.
