#FinancialFridays: Canadian Dental Care Plan

The federal Dental Care Plan is supposed to cover those in Canada without other dental care coverage. There is an eligibility criteria.

As of May 1st, Canadians 70 years and older can get their oral healthcare covered by this program and those 65-69 can apply. In June 2023, children under 18 years old and people with valid Disability Tax Credits can also apply. Starting in 2025, all remaining eligible Canadians can apply.

To find out if you are eligible, there is a simple questionnaire on the website in the Apply section: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/dental/dental-care-plan/qualify.html

If you have a dentist already, make sure you speak with them to see if they are registered with the Canadian Dental Care Plan. It is voluntary for dentists, denturists, and dental hygienists and not mandatory for them to be a part of the program.

If you don’t have a dentist, there is a searchable database of available CDCP providers: Provider Search – Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) | Sun Life

There will be changes to the program that take effect in July that will let dentists not registered to still process claims. It will still be up to your dentist whether they do this. Speaking with your dentist directly is the best way to find out if they are registered and/or participating.
