We Remember Them 2024

Join us on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 for the 4th annual We Remember Them event. We will gather at the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market to honour the lives lost to the ongoing opioid crisis in the City of Owen Sound.

From 8 am to 12:30 pm, the event invites the public to participate by taking a carnation and symbolically “dropping it” into the river. This act represents the individuals dear to our hearts who have been lost within our community. The river will be adorned with the carnations surrounding the 8th and 9th Street Bridges, creating a visual display of remembrance.

To further support the cause, donations are graciously accepted to contribute to the Supportive Outreach Service (SOS) Project. This project plays a pivotal role in assisting and helping people affected by substance abuse.

The inspiration behind this event stems from Gelja Sheardown, who initiated it in 2021. Her dedication to honoring the memory of her late husband, Barrett Warwick, who tragically succumbed to a fatal overdose, serves as a driving force behind the event. Gelja fondly remembers Barrett as a hardworking individual, a loving father, and a devoted husband. His sudden absence left a void in her life and motivated her to create this event for others facing similar loss and grief.

We invite you to join us as we come together and remember those who are no longer with us. Let us honour their memory and raise awareness about the devastating impact of the opioid crisis in our community.
