Today is World Food Day

World Food Day (WFD) was founded by the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945 and has been observed annually, every October 16, since 1981. The event was established to increase awareness of world hunger and poverty and to inspire solutions for world change.

If you are able to, please consider donating to your local food bank.

We are happy to share information about how we as the United Way Bruce Grey is helping find easier ways to access food for people who struggle to fill their stomachs.

Good Food Box

The Good Food Box in Bruce and Grey counties. The poster below shares more information and the locations where the Good Food Box operates. Robin Cork, our Food Security Coordinator, oversees this program and if you have any questions please email her at food@unitedwaybg.com or call our office at 519-376-1560. The Neighbours to Neighbours Initiative allows agencies or individuals to purchase Good Food Boxes for households in need. Your donation can support local families, donate today if you are able.

OSHaRE, The Salvation Army, and other community frontline support services are a part of the SOS (Supportive Outreach Services) for vulnerable people in Owen Sound and throughout Grey Bruce.

Grants

Through grants, the United Way Bruce Grey helps important programs, projects, and agencies. Here are some food-related grants that went out in 2023:

Assisting with food costs by Ontario Student Nutrition Program Grey Bruce: $6,536
With this program food costs associated with the Ontario Student Nutrition Program will support healthy food to 23,000 students in Grey Bruce Schools.

Community Brunch Program by Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce: $3,000
With this program, the Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce will provide 249 days of nutritious brunch meals for CMHA clients and other vulnerable individuals with food security challenges.

Meaford Community Garden by Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach: $3,000
With this program, Meaford Community Garden will provide access to healthy locally grown fresh produce and offer assistance to build an educational space to teach how to grow food for community members in need and 1100 kids and youth at a local school.

Break Bread Community Take-Out Meal by Chesley Baptist Church: $3,000
With this program Break Bread Community Take-Out Meal will provide hot, healthy meals, social interaction, and a sense of community where sometimes other needs are met, for over 200 people. We feed 175 – 200 each week but there is a small percentage of people that are fluid. Some people don’t get meals on some weeks but others do.

A Focus on Fresh 2023 by Meaford Food Bank and Outreach: $2,992
With this program, The Meaford Food Bank and Outreach will provide 30 fresh produce boxes for households struggling with grocery prices.

Food is Medicine by SOAHAC (Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre): $2,992
With this program, SOAHAC’s Food is Medicine program will provide healthy food by way of good food boxes and meal kits for local Indigenous individuals and families experiencing poverty and food insecurity.

Fresh Food Prescription Program by South East Grey Community Health Centre: $11,968
With this program, the South East Grey Community Health Centre will develop a Fresh Food Prescription Program to provide 544 boxes of fresh vegetables and fruits to low-income households, in 4 municipalities.

Food Security Programs by The Meeting Place Tobermory: $2,000
With this program, Food Security Programs will provide participation in an accessible, nutritious, skill building food community food for those in need of greater food security

Kincardine Good Food Box Neighbour to Neighbour Initiative by Kincardine Community Services Association: $2,992
With this program, the Kincardine Good Food Box Neighbour to Neighbour Initiative will improve the diet for 136 seniors and/or financially struggling families.

Eating Disorder Program by Keystone Child, Youth & Family Services: $10,000
With this program, Keystone Child, Youth & Family Services will gain additional training in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders for our staff to better assess and support children and youth in Grey/Bruce with eating disorders.
