The Cost Of Living Is Skyrocketing
The day-to-day expenses that everyone pays are higher than ever. Everyone is feeling the pinch, and it can be especially hard for people with low-incomes.

Choices have to be made on what to pay for
People on a low-income have to choose what they will spend their money on. Some have to choose rent over food or heat over medication. The cost of living is making it impossible to live a normal life.
In January and February of 2025 the United Way provided $5 500 in utility support, in 2026 we’ve provided $23 250 in support. That’s an increase of over 300%
New clients looking for support at United Way
The United Way Bruce Grey has been seeing an increased number of new clients for its Utility Assistance Program. Some clients who used to donate to various local charities are now seeking help themselves. There are also cases where people have lost a loved one or unforeseen things have happened in their lives, which has reduced their income.
Rises in prices is getting out of hand
The fuel to heat a home is becoming even more unaffordable. Grocery prices have doubled for many families. The price of gas for cars in Ontario is reaching new heights. This is happening locally, provincially, and nationwide.
This graph shows the vertical price jump of furnace oil in Canada. From $1.60 per liter at the end of January to $2.29 per litre in mid-March. That’s a 43% increase! The United Way’s grant of $700 would purchase 437.5 litres in January, but only 305 in March, and that’s not including the taxes.
