When Community Shows Up

Sometimes the strength of a community is most visible in the moments when people simply show up for one another.

Saturday night partners across Owen Sound mobilized quickly to support residents affected by the boil water advisory. What began as a few quick messages between community partners quickly became a coordinated effort to make sure people had access to safe drinking water and the information they needed. Many of the most vulnerable in the City, do not have the tools to boil water. The have hot plates, or no kitchen at all.

Working together, teams from the United Way of Bruce Grey, Grey County Paramedic Services, Owen Sound Hunger and Relief Effort (OSHARE), Safe ‘N Sound, and FreshCo. coordinated supplies and delivery. Water and drinks were first delivered to Safe ‘N Sound and to residents at the Coach Inn.

Water and cold drinks were delivered to Safe ‘N Sound and to residents at The Coach Inn. When that exhausted what water was on hand, partners quickly worked together to source additional water from FreshCo.

From there, teams visited every unit at the Georgian Bluffs apartments next to Stonetree Golf and Fitness, providing a full case of water to each household, sharing information about the advisory, and answering questions from residents. A paramedic supervisor joined the team to help reassure residents and address health concerns, particularly for seniors that live there.

On Sunday the SOS staff checked on Safe n Sound and providing more water, and spent some time in the afternoon back at the Georgian Bluffs complex supporting the residents.

What stood out most Saturday evening was not just the logistics of the response, but the spirit behind it.

We like to say organizations stepped outside their usual roles, but supporting the community, after hours, on the weekend, when needed, is very usual for those involved. Businesses made room for emergency solutions. Volunteers and workers stepped in wherever they were needed. Together, they ensured that residents knew they were not facing the situation alone.

For many residents, the most meaningful part of the visit was not just receiving water, but knowing that someone had taken the time to check on them. In moments like these, community is not an abstract idea. It is the act of knocking on a door, answering a question, offering reassurance, and reminding someone that their wellbeing matters.

This kind of connectedness is what makes Bruce Grey special. When challenges arise, people respond with a simple question: How can we help? What do you need?

United Way of Bruce Grey is proud to work alongside so many partners who share that commitment to caring for our community.

We continue to work with the City of Owen Sound and community partners to ensure support reaches those who need it most.

Because at the heart of it all, we are community.
