Struggling to pay your utility bills during the Covid-19 pandemic? Help is available.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted us all but for those who were already struggling or have lost their job, these are very tough times indeed. In addition to our Utility Assistance Program which provides help for heating and electricity costs for low income households, there are other programs available as well.

We have included a list of valuable resources below:
United Way of Bruce Grey Utility Assistance Program: One time assistance per year for heating and electricity costs for low income households. Call 2-1-1 to apply.

Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP): Provides a monthly reduction on your hydro bill (for low income households). To apply online, visit: https://ontarioelectricitysupport.ca/ or contact the United Way of Bruce Grey for assistance with submitting your application.

Energy Rate Relief: The Ontario government has announced that they are extending the electricity rate relief for all residences, farms and small businesses until May 31, 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic. Customers will continue to be billed at the lowest price, called the “off-peak” rate, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Disconnection Bans: Both electricity and natural gas providers have extended the ban deadline until July 31st due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This means that you cannot be disconnected for non-payment or if you are behind. We do encourage you to make regular payments however so your account does not get too far into arrears. Be sure to contact your provider to see what financial options might be available to you.

AffordAbility Fund: The Affordability Fund (AFT) supports energy efficient home upgrades and now has a pilot project operating in Bruce and Grey Counties under the direction of the United Way of Bruce Grey and the United Way of Eastern Ontario. AFT is designed to help people who do not qualify for low-income conservation programs and who are unable to undertake energy efficiency improvements without support.
