#SafetySunday – Spring Safety While Driving

Spring is slowly making its way into the Bruce Grey area, and with that, drivers and pedestrians alike have to watch out for each other. There will also be kids out playing and walking to school, so slow down and act safely.

There are also a lot of changes when spring arrives, so here is a top 10 of things to watch out for while driving around the area:

1. Look out for pedestrians and cyclists
More people are out walking and biking. Stay alert, especially in all urban areas.

2. Check your tires
Temperature swings affect tire pressure. Make sure they’re properly inflated and have good tread.

3. Be cautious on wet roads
Spring rain makes roads slippery, especially after a dry spell. Increase the following distance and brake gently.

4. Turn on your headlights and brake lights when you are driving
Even during the day, this helps others see you clearly.

5. Watch for potholes
Winter leaves roads full of them. Slow down and avoid sudden swerves that could cause a loss of control.

6. Watch for wildlife
Animals are more active in spring. Slow down in rural or wooded areas, especially at dawn and dusk.

7. Clear your windshield fully
Leftover salt and grime can reduce visibility. Top up washer fluid and replace worn wipers.

8. Avoid distracted driving
Nice weather makes it tempting to relax. Stay focused and keep your phone out of reach.

9. Be mindful of flooding
Never drive through standing water. You don’t know how deep it is or what’s underneath.

10. Give yourself extra time
Road conditions can change quickly in spring. Giving yourself a few extra minutes on your drive reduces the urge to rush.
