#SafetySunday: Hide Trigger Words on Social Media

Hey friends,
Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough airtime: protecting your peace on social media. Yup, you can actually hide trigger words from your feeds, and no, this isn’t overreacting or being dramatic. It’s about self-care.
Why Hide Trigger Words?
Maybe you’re dealing with grief, anxiety, burnout, or just feeling done with certain topics.
Sometimes, even just one word or headline can throw us off for the whole day. When we start filtering that stuff out, we’re telling our nervous system: “Hey, I’ve got your back.”
This isn’t about ignoring the world. It’s about managing what you’re taking in, especially when your cup is already full.
How Does It Help?
Hiding trigger words:
- Creates space for healthier content and thoughts.
- Keeps doomscrolling from spiraling into a mental health crash.
- Gives your brain (and heart) a break.
- Reinforces boundaries, and that’s empowering.
Even just knowing you have some control over your feed can bring a surprising amount of relief.
How to Hide Trigger Words: The Quick How-To
Here’s how to do it on the big platforms:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap the three lines > Settings > Privacy > Hidden Words.
- Use the “Custom Words and Phrases” to list anything you want filtered from comments, messages, or suggested content.
- On desktop, go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Profile and Tagging.
- Under Hide comments containing certain words, enter your custom list.
- Facebook also gives options to review posts you’re tagged in before they show up.
Twitter (X)
- Tap your profile pic > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Mute and block.
- Add keywords, hashtags, or phrases you want muted.
- Choose how long to mute them (forever is an option!).
TikTok
- Go to Settings and Privacy > Content Preferences > Filtered words.
- Add words to hide from your “For You” and “Following” feeds.
Each platform does it a little differently, but most of them have some kind of feature to filter or mute stuff. Dig around in your settings, it’s worth it.
Bonus Tip: Less Time = More Peace
Another powerful move? Limiting your social media time.
Try:
- Setting time limits on your phone for certain apps.
- Moving apps off your home screen.
- Turning off notifications that aren’t urgent (hint: most of them aren’t).
- Giving yourself one “scroll window” a day, then logging out.
Social media can be a great tool, but it’s also designed to suck you in and overwhelm you. You get to choose how much access it gets to your brainspace.
So this week, take 10 minutes and tweak your feed. Hide the stuff that hurts. Protect your peace. Put up the boundaries you deserve.
Your mental health is worth every click.
