November Marks 15 Years of Financial Literacy Month in Canada

United Way Bruce Grey Encourages Everyone to “Talk Money”

Bruce and Grey Counties, ON, November 2025— This November marks the 15th anniversary of Financial Literacy Month in Canada, a national initiative led by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). Each year, FCAC uses this month to highlight the importance of financial education and well-being.

This year’s theme, Talk Money, encourages Canadians to have open and honest conversations about money to strengthen financial knowledge, skills, and confidence.

“Talking about money and finances helps people share knowledge, seek advice, and plan for their future,” explains the FCAC. “It’s about breaking down the stigma that often surrounds financial discussions.”

Local Support Through United Way Bruce Grey’s Financial Literacy Program

Here in Grey and Bruce Counties, the United Way of Bruce Grey offers its Financial Literacy Program, a free and confidential service that helps people understand their income, expenses, debts, and financial goals. Meetings are available by phone, virtually, or in person.

In 2024, 297 households accessed the program, which is funded through community donations, small grants, and matching funds.

“People are working so hard to make ends meet… and it is becoming more and more difficult,” says Caroline Araujo Abbotts, Financial Literacy Program Coordinator. “People aren’t living pay cheque to pay cheque. They are living from bill to bill. Talking to someone outside of their family or social circle can be very helpful. We focus on providing relevant information so people can make informed decisions about their money.”

Building Knowledge Across the Community

The Financial Literacy Program also supports local social service organizations. In August, 20 workers took part in a budgeting workshop facilitated by United Way.

One participant shared, “The workshop was a great reminder to put aside our personal values and beliefs. Budgeting isn’t just about the numbers; it’s about aligning those numbers with what’s important to each individual.”

The team also writes a Financial Friday Blog, published every week on the United Way Bruce Grey website, sharing practical tips and community resources to help people manage their money.
