#FinancialFridays: What the 3G Shutdown Means for Your Cell Phone

Phones are so important for keeping in contact with our friends, family, workers, and employers. Wireless mobile technology is improving so quickly and it is tough keeping up. When we hear about mobile phones, we hear about 3G, 4G, and 5G. What does this mean? The “G” stands for “generation,” and the number stands for the version. The generation signifies a leap in how fast data is transferred and the type of things the phone can do. Mobile technology has progressed to 5G, the fifth generation.

To find out what “G” your phone supports, check your phone’s settings. The detailed steps will be different for each phone type.

  • For Android, go to Settings>Network & Internet>Mobile network>Preferred network type.
  • For iPhone, go to Settings>Cellular>Cellular Data Options>Voice & Data

Look for options like “LTE”, “3G”, “4G”, or “5G”.

Most phone companies in Ontario (like Rogers, Bell, and Telus) are shutting down their 3G networks by the end of 2025. Some, like Rogers and Fido, will shut it down as early as July 31, 2025. After that, 3G-only phones will stop working completely; you won’t be able to make calls, send texts, or use data, not even to call 911.

Here are some phones that still use 3G (for now). These phones might still work until the shutdown:

1. Ushining 3G Flip Phone
• A basic flip phone
• Works with Rogers, Fido, Bell, and Telus (for now)

2. Mini 3G Flip Phone
• A small flip-style phone

3. Amonsee 3G Smartphone
• A small Android-style phone
• Costs around $85

4. Older BlackBerry or Nokia 3310 (3G model)
• May still work if you can find one used
• Only good until 3G networks shut down

Important Information

• After July 31, 2025, these phones will no longer work on any major networks in Canada.

• If you need a phone for the long term, you should get a basic 4G phone that supports VoLTE (Voice over LTE). These look and feel similar to older phones but will keep working after the 3G shutdown.

What to Do

• If you only need a phone for a few months, a 3G phone could work.

• If you want a phone that will keep working after 2025, choose a VoLTE 4G phone instead.

We want to make sure people are aware of this so they can plan ahead for this disruption, the costs, and the process of learning a new technology.
