#FinancialFridays: Paperwork Assemble!

It may seem early to start thinking about it…but future you will thank…now you!
Get yourself an envelope or folder and put it somewhere you will easily remember and that is easy to get to. This may be on the book shelf or in a specific kitchen cupboard; Wherever that place is has to make sense for you. When tax-related documents start coming in, put them directly into the folder. You don’t have to organize them when you put them in; you can do that later. And it will be so much easier having them all in one place.
“But Caroline, I get things by email, not by mail.”
Then make a folder in your email or on your computer.
The goal is to have as many of these documents as possible in one place to make your life easier when personal income tax season (March and April) comes around.
These documents may include:
Receipts for expenses you paid during the tax year
- Rental receipts
- Property tax receipts
- Donation receipts
- Medical expense receipts (you can ask your pharmacy for a breakdown from the year if you haven’t kept the receipts)
- Tuition receipts (T2202A)
- Child care receipts

Note on donation receipts
If you donated to the United Way of Bruce Grey directly (not through CanadaHelps) throughout 2025 or you are a monthly donor, the United Way will send your donation receipts in early January, unless you asked for them as you donated. Watch for your donation receipt in the coming weeks.
Charities are required to send out donation receipts by February 28th.
CanadaHelps donors can log into their account and download their receipts from that portal, which would be true of other donation portals as well.
