Backpacks and Big Smiles
Hi everyone, Lauryn here with your end-of-week update on the Backpack Program.
We’ve had another busy and inspiring week, and I want to start by saying this program is only possible because of the generosity, care, and dedication of our community. Every single backpack that goes out the door is a direct result of your support, whether you have donated supplies, made a financial gift, gave your time, or helped spread the word.
Stuff the Bus Success
Last week, we held our annual Stuff the Bus event at Staples in Owen Sound, and the turnout was incredible. The community showed up in full force, filling the bus with donations and encouragement. That outpouring of support is already making a difference in getting backpacks into the hands of kids who need them most. We are so grateful for everyone who participated, donated, or helped make the day possible.
And we are not done yet. This Friday, we will be in Hanover at Grant’s Your Independent Grocer from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This Saturday, we will be at Vanderwerf’s Your Independent Grocer in Port Elgin. Come by, say hello, and help us fill the bus again.
A Special Thank You

This week, we received a heartwarming photo from a family who has already received their backpacks. Seeing the smiles and excitement from the kids is a powerful reminder of why we do this work. It is about more than just supplies; it is about giving children a sense of readiness, belonging, and confidence as they head into a new school year.
This Week’s Impact
So far, we have packed and sent out 1,574 backpacks. We also have another 130 ready to go, bringing our total packed so far to 1,704.

Francesca and Lauryn after loading 154 backpacks in the van. Special shoutout to OSHaRE for delivering these backpacks to Markdale this week!
This week, we delivered backpacks to:
- South East Grey Community Health Centre – 154 backpacks (featured in the photo above)
- Kincardine Foodbank – 21 backpacks
- Women’s Shelter Saugeen – 9 backpacks
- Durham Foodbank – 3 backpacks
Meeting the Need
The need continues to grow. So far, we have received:
- Agency orders: 522
- Individual orders: 404
That is a total of 1,926 backpacks requested, and we are working hard to fill every single one.
Why It Matters
These backpacks are more than school supplies. They are a fresh start, a boost of confidence, and a reminder to every child that their community believes in them.
Thank you for helping us make sure kids start the school year with what they need to succeed. We still have a lot of work ahead, but together, we can meet the need.
