Backpack Program Update: Over 500 Backpacks Packed & Counting

Hi everyone, Lauryn here – Backpack Program Coordinator at United Way Bruce Grey!

As we move full steam ahead into the summer, I wanted to provide an update on the progress we’ve made with this year’s Backpack Program—a long-standing initiative that helps ensure students across Bruce and Grey Counties head back to school prepared and supported.

Current Program Stats (as of July 4, 2025)

  • 513 backpacks have been built so far this season.
  • 288 backpacks have already been distributed through agency partners across the region.

I’ve been working hard to assemble and organize backpacks filled with essential school supplies: pens, pencils, notebooks, crayons, binders, and more. Each backpack is tailored to age group and grade level, with a focus on ensuring every student receives the items they need to feel confident on their first day of school.

Why This Program Matters

The Backpack Program is about more than school supplies—it’s about access, dignity, and equal opportunity. Every year, hundreds of families in Bruce Grey face the financial challenge of back-to-school season. With the rising cost of living, these challenges are even greater in 2025.

By supporting the Backpack Program, you’re helping:

  • Reduce financial pressure on families.
  • Boost students’ confidence and academic readiness.
  • Create a more equitable start to the school year for children in need.

Distribution Partners & Reach

The program works in collaboration with local agencies, schools, and community organizations to ensure the backpacks reach students where and when they need them most. These partners are essential to making sure we’re reaching rural, remote, and high-need areas in both counties.

How You Can Help

We’re always looking for support in three key ways:

  1. Donations
  2. Spreading the word

Thank You

To everyone who has contributed so far—whether through a donation, time, or encouragement—thank you. Your support is helping over 500 students start their school year strong. And we’re just getting started.

More updates to come as we get closer to September!

Warmly,
Lauryn
