2nd Annual Unmuting: Post Event Update
Yesterday, on May 9th, 2024, marked a very informative day for both ourselves and the various local agencies and services operating in Grey Bruce. The 2nd edition of the “Unmuting” event took place at the South East Grey Community Health Centre in Markdale, serving as a platform for fostering dialogue and understanding among organizations aimed at aiding community members in accessing crucial resources and programs.
The event began with an interactive session where attendees circulated the room to familiarize themselves with the diverse array of organizations present. Each participant was encouraged to jot down questions on sticky notes, initiating an engaging exchange of inquiries and insights. Ten featured profiles were given the opportunity to address these questions, providing valuable insights into their respective missions and services.
Among the notable attendees were:
- United Way Bruce Grey
- Grey Bruce OHT (Ontario Health Team)
- M’Wikwedong Indigenous Friendship Centre
- Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce
- Bruce County
- Salvation Army Wiarton
- South East Grey Community Health Centre
- Grey County

The afternoon session involved collaborative brainstorming exercises aimed at addressing hypothetical yet realistic scenarios. Participants at each table deliberated on how to assist individuals facing specific challenges, drawing upon their organizational expertise and networking with other relevant resources.
One such scenario involved a 64-year-old male residing in a rural town within Grey County, grappling with precarious housing, mobility issues, and health complications including a fractured jaw. Despite being on ODSP he is lacking a primary care provider, and he faces barriers in accessing essential nutritional supplements and communication channels.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Ontario Health Team (OHT) for generously sponsoring this event, as well as to Susan’s Deli for providing their delicious catering services. Another special thanks is owed to the South East Grey Community Health Centre for their gracious hospitality in hosting us.
With the success of this gathering, we aim to make it an annual tradition, recognizing the ever-evolving nature of information and the invaluable opportunity it provides for direct engagement and collaboration within our community.
