2,087 Reasons to Smile: The Backpack Program Update
As we wrap up this week, we want to share a quick update from the Backpack Program. The energy and support behind this initiative continues to amaze us, and it’s important to remember that this program exists because of the community. Every backpack packed, every child supported, and every agency helped is a direct result of the generosity and care of the people of Bruce Grey.

Backpacks Packed
So far, 1,937 backpacks have already gone out into the community, with another 159 waiting to head out the door. That brings us to a total of 2,087 backpacks ready to support local students this school year.
This Week’s Agency Deliveries
This week, backpacks were delivered to:
- Bruce Grey Child and Family Services – 85 backpacks
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grey Bruce West Simcoe – 100 backpacks
Total Requests
The need remains strong, and the numbers speak for themselves. So far, we’ve received requests for:
- 1,625 backpacks from agencies
- 474 backpacks from individuals
Bringing the total requested to 2,099.
Important Update for Families
Starting tomorrow, if you haven’t signed up to get a backpack, you’ll need to call our office at 519-376-1560 to arrange for pickup at our office in Owen Sound. Please call as soon as you can so we can make sure your child has what they need before the school year begins.
Community Thanks
A huge thank you to everyone who came out for Stuff the Bus in Hanover and Port Elgin. Your generosity and spirit keep this program moving forward and ensure that kids across Bruce Grey feel supported and ready for school.
A Personal Note from Me
This upcoming week will be my last with United Way Bruce Grey. Being part of the Backpack Program and helping families get ready for school has been such a rewarding experience. I’m truly going to miss helping people in this way, and I’m so grateful to have been part of something that makes such a real difference in our community.

Looking Ahead
As the summer winds down and back-to-school season approaches, the Backpack Program continues to meet kids where they’re at, making sure they start the year ready to learn and feel confident. None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our donors, volunteers, and community partners.
Thank you for helping us make sure every child has what they need to succeed.
